Fun with Parents

My parents are in town! They flew in from Virginia on Tuesday afternoon and I drove to the airport to pick them up while Jason stayed behind to make his dad's chili for dinner. My dad has recently been diagnosed with allergies to food that have gluten, dairy, and soy in them so on Wednesday we made a trek to the closest Whole Foods Market, about 30 minutes away. Whole Foods is a grocery store that features only natural and organic food in every department (down to the meat served in the deli) and it is a great place to find food made with potato and rice flour, such as rice noodles. We really hit the jackpot there. We found some muffin and cake mixes that fit his new eating criteria as well as a new cereal for him to try. I think the best thing we found, however, was ice-cream made from rice! We got three different flavors for my dad to try and so far he has reported that the strawberry flavor is the best.


On Thursday we had a lazy and relaxing day. We enjoyed walking Lucy in the morning. I got out the board games and convinced my mom to play Blink and Mastermind with me. That afternoon we all drove up to the top of our mountain so we could see the naval base and surrounding fields from a higher vantage point. We were also able to catch the sunset and watch the sun as it finally sank below the Pacific Ocean. After dinner, we had a great time playing Balderdash--my all-time favorite game.

Here we are at the top of Laguna Peak (or what I refer to as My Mountain) and the fields are down below us. Jason estimates that at the top, we were about 1,000 feet up. The government has a couple big satellite dishes and other equipment at the top of Laguna Peak which kind of mar the sight but...those satellite dishes are what enable Jason to sent emails and for me to receive them when he's out on the boat.

Yesterday, Jason went into work for a short time in the morning and then I took my parents over so they could have a tour. After that, we all took Lucy to the beach so she could show off her fetching skills and play in the water. Jason's squadron was suppose to fly to Fallon, NV on Sunday morning, but as soon as we got back from the beach yesterday afternoon, he got a phone call and was told that due to forecasted inclement weather, they were leaving early this morning instead. That put a damper on our plans to go to the Reagan Presidential Library today so we decided to go out to dinner at P.F. Chang's last night to make the most of the time that we still had together. P.F. Chang's was the perfect choice because they feature a special gluten free menu so even my dad enjoyed his meal!

And here are the four of us outside of P.F. Chang's. It was so warm yesterday afternoon at the beach (everyone shed their sweatshirts right after that picture was taken) but it was pretty chilly by the time we ate dinner last night!
