Tall Ships

Yay!! Jason came home yesterday morning! And, his plane came two hours earlier than anticipated...thank goodness I did lots of cleaning Thursday afternoon :)

Since Jason had the rest of the day off, we decided to venture over to Ventura Harbor to see two Tall Ships, the Lady Washington and the Hawaiian Chieftain, that were visiting. Both ships are owned by one individual and their home port is in Washington but they spend the majority of the year sailing up and down the West Coast, from Canada to Mexico, visiting different harbors and providing educational experiences for school kids.

The Hawaiian Chieftain is a replica of a typical European ship that sailed during the 1800's. It has ten sails and is 106 feet long...which really isn't that big!

The Lady Washington (above) is the Official Ship of the State of Washington and is an exact replica of the orignial Lady Washington which was built in Massachusetts in the 1750's. After being used in the Revolutionary War, the Lady Washington was refited to make a trading voyage around Cape Horn and in 1788, she was the first American ship to land on the West Coast. The neatest piece of trivia about the Lady Washington, however, is that she starred as the British ship, The Interceptor, in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie!

The Lady Washington's crew has a sense of humor...

And, here is a peek at my baby bump on a boat...

P.S. Blogger's spell checker isn't working right now, so the secret of my horrible spelling is out in the open!
